Gourmet coffee
Even though Europeans have the reputation for being the coffee drinkers,
the United States actually consumes one-fifth of all the coffee produced.
However, this number encompasses the coffee sold by major companies
(like Folgers) so Americans rarely get to partake in specialty or gourmet
coffee.
Over the last couple decades, Jamaica’s Blue Mountain coffee
has become some of the most sought-after (and expensive) gourmet coffee.
The right combination of soil, altitude, and climate has produced beans
noted for their mild flavor and lack of bitterness.
Whenever choosing gourmet coffee, it’s always important to select
the kind with a fair trade stamp. A great amount of coffee is produced
by field workers who have to deal with conditions akin to sweatshops.
Fair Trade means an importer must pay a minimum price per pound of $1.26,
provide due credit to farmers, and provide accommodations such as help
transitioning to organic farming.
